Southern Peru's surfing is centred around the capital Lima and Punta Hermosa where consistent south-west swells from the Roaring 40s combine with consistent southerly winds. Predominantly south-easterly (offshore for the best north-westerly facing spots) in the mornings, swinging slightly westerly and onshore in the afternoons these winds are a product of the cool Humboldt current and dominate the whole of this western coast of South America. Swells here are consistent and can get extremely sizeable with only a slight drop in consistency and power during the summer. The country's surf culture is perhaps the oldest in the world and is claimed to date back to 3000BC when the waves were ridden on reed boats. Water temperature varies between 14-20ºC or 57-68ºF.
