Ay Keramas! Event Horizon Nears

Ay Keramas! The shiny new toy of the ASP World Tour is due to be unwrapped in thumping surf on Tuesday, June 18th. Once a secret spot this high-stepping barrel/wall/barrel has it all, and is potentially the most exciting event since last week in Fiji.

You should also be stirred by day one of the forecast period for the Oakley Bali Pro, the swell gradually tapers on day two and three before gently simmering for a few days. Then bang, on Monday the 24 and 25th it bubbles over again. This is quite normal for the time of year, Keramas in June has a 99% swell consistency on our 10 year seasonal average, providing the event with plenty of scope to stick the surfers in the optimum conditions at a break oft-cited as the power performance yardstick.

Both Cloudbreak and Keramas are considered high-performance waves, but they’re very different. At Cloudbreak, it was about commitment in barrels. Out at Keramas, there are barrels, but there are also some of the best sections on the planet for really major maneuvers.John John Florence

Unlike every other World Tour stop we don’t really know what is likely to happen, people might offer prediction but they are as substantial as shoes made of sand. This event is new, the variables untested, the promise of a perfect playing field is mouth-watering. What we do know is that there is surf coming and that with feet in the swimming pool and faces buried in Instagram feeds, 36 of the world’s best surfers are about to go for it hammer and tongs over this reef.

“It feels really good to be back and healthy,” Florence said of his Fijian comeback. “We had incredible waves last week and everyone is really excited to be here in Bali. Both Cloudbreak and Keramas are considered high-performance waves, but they’re very different. At Cloudbreak, it was about commitment in barrels. Out at Keramas, there are barrels, but there are also some of the best sections on the planet for really major maneuvers. We’re going to see some crazy stuff this week.”

Bruce Irons, winner of the 2008 Rip Curl Pro Search Bali (the last time the Tour was here), will compete as a wildcard. “I’m super thankful to Oakley for giving me this opportunity,” Irons said. “I love Bali and Keramas is one of the best waves in the world. Hopefully it turns on for us. The guys on tour today are no joke. There are no easy draws. I’m just going to do my best.”

The hot favourite with internet pundits is without-a-doubt Jordy Smith “I have been coming to Bali for a number of years and Keramas is always a highlight.” Said he “It has a nice barrel section and then a perfect wall for you to unleash on. I’ve been looking forward to this event all year and the boys are going to go mad out here.”

All the usual event gubbins are HERE.
