Sunset was too big to paddle earlier this week. And this is in a land inhabited by some of the finest protagonists of under-the-radar big wave exploits.
"It's not often Sunset gets that big and rippy that you have to tow," recounts photog Eugene Van Der Elst. "It was impossible to paddle as the water was moving so much, shooting wasn't easy as there was lots of side-wash and spray.
''I shot alone on a ski and finding the right position while keeping my camera dry was a big task. The other factor out there is - you need to be safe and keep an eye on everyone. This was the biggest swell for the year for sure."
