Gallery: By Far The Biggest Day at Nazare This Season

Tuesday was a day that promised a lot swell-wise, having only equalled or exceed such heights 17 times in our records that date back to 1980. But as is too often the case, the winds refused to play ball, limiting the number of rideable mountains for the brave few that actually jumped from skis and into straps. Not to say there wasn't a few truly heroic moments though — Francisco Porcella, Lucas Chumbo and Pedro Scooby, we're looking at you.

However, one of the finer things about Nazare as a big wave spot is its surroundings and close proximity to shore. It's a show like no other. Monstrous tee-pee peaks detonate on the inside and spray spectators viewing from the cliff whilst 100ft sets black out the horizon beyond. So whether many waves were being ridden or not, there's always a story to tell and an audience to entertain. Take it all in through the lens of Helio Antonio:

"There has been one swell in the ‘modern’ Nazare era of a similar size on the 2nd Feb 2014," says MSW head forecaster Ben Freeston. "This one actually came in about 10% bigger, (forecast vs forecast) but that was at 3am so by the time it was surfed it was nearer 20ft@17/18," (as opposed to the 19ft@19 we witnessed on Tuesday).

"One more absurd day of much learning here in Nazaré," says Lucas Chumbo. "Many emotions, very dangerous but it was a really big show. Thanks team."

It took until later in the day and a lower tide for the wedge to come into full effect - but when it did, so spectacular.

"Amazing last couple days, feeling blessed and overwhelmed with the love everyone is sending me," says Francisco Porcella.
"Thank you Axi Muniain for being the best tow partner, and obrigado Nazare for a wave I'll never forget," - which you can find below.
