GALLERY: Ex-Hurricane Sam Dazzles Europe Part I

Swell from ex-hurricane Sam has been blasting into the shores of Europe today. One of those days when anyone could look out the window and think, 'huh, that's a piece of me' and surf wherever they dropped their finger along the Old Continent's western front – provided you could get there.

Any time a hurricane is seen boomeranging its way over to Europe, the heart rate immediately goes up a few notches. Sam has been on the radar for some time, sending swell to the east coast of the US before churning across the Atlantic (where it resembled a supernova for a time) and then marched right on over to the likes of the UK, Ireland, France and Portugal.

And although not all-time, it sure was fun enough today [October 7]. Nic Von Rupp, Miguel Blanco the standouts at one spot in Portugal, with Mason Ho, Josh Moniz, Ella McCaffray and local lad Guilherme Fonseca taking charge at Supertubos.

Meanwhile, the period came in a little hot for France's south west, but still a fun few kegs to get into if you were hardy enough.

Josh Moniz. NB, we know Josh took a nasty fall, wishing him all the best and a speedy recovery. We understand he's doing ok.

In the UK's south west, it was a case of find sheltered corners in the morning and wait. An 18 second swell period meant that sets were few and far between but if you were in the right place, you could snag a couple bombs – and that's before the swell peaks tomorrow – of which, we'll bring you all the coverage.

A Sam-pagne supernova!

Wind's getting up at the likes of Portugal and Supertubos now, so the emphasis will shift over to the UK and Ireland, with some potential for France on the cards too.

AS MSW's forecaster Tony Butt says of the conditions for tomorrow: “In Ireland, the long-period forerunners arrive overnight, and the swell fills in on Thursday, peaking on late Thursday or early Friday with wave heights up to ten feet at the most exposed spots. Winds are from the south then southeast, stronger in the south.

France! We know a few corners were working but we're going to unload you with that tomorrow. Promise! (Maybe)

"Expect a similar story in Cornwall and the UK southwest, with best conditions on Friday as the swell fills in and winds back to the southeast. Wave heights hit six feet or so on Friday, dropping through Saturday with continuing good wind conditions.”

Bonus! Supertubos Sundowner Session
These images came in late last night, after Henrique Casinhas put in the work after hours. "Went to check another spot but it wasn't very good," he says. "So back to Supertubos for this sunset session and you could feel the new, bigger swell filling in."
