Yesterday, signs of Typhoon Shanshan showed in Japan, as a swell pulsed into the shores of the land of the rising sun.
Specifically, the reefs of Katsuura and Malibu – where you may recall in 2005 Andy Irons besting king Kelly Slater in an epic typhoon swell battle, in similar conditions.
And does this sing a sign of hope for the Olympics? The proposed venue for 2020 is in Chiba, a mere 20kms away. There's still strong debate about what our humble community would like to see – surfing in the ocean or a wave pool? We've already bought you news that the WSL are building a KS Surf Ranch in Tokyo – but whether it'll be adopted for the Olympics is anyone's guess.
Japan's seen quite the active few months, with 13 typhoons already in the mix. It's reassuring figures for swell during the Olympics but also, how good would it be to see our favourite protagonists throw down in actual, chunky conditions. Or is it too much a gamble?
