It’s been a while since we saw a hurricane quite like Frank rip into California. In fact, the last time you’d see anything similar is Hurricane Rosa back in 2018. Heck, this thing sent waves to Trestles, Wedge, Malibu and even all the way up to San Francisco, which is having probably its worst ever winter of waves.

This was a few days for the early risers though, Monday and Tuesday were greeted with glassy conditions and pumping surf before it all went a bit funky.

“I was pleasantly surprised with the amount of swell Frank produced,” said Nate Yeomans, pictured here. “I took my kids swimming down at T-Street late Sunday afternoon as the swell started to show. I was surprised with the amount of energy and current in the ocean. I set my alarm early Monday morning to be on it and see how much swell was showing. At first light I could tell it was on.”

Frank’s track was a bit strange too. Instead of holidaying in Hawaii, Frank instead took a casual cruise into the California swell window, met up with a subtropical ridge over the southwestern US, which allowed it to make a beeline towards the west coast. What a gent for doing so!

And how it looked for Wedge? Grist to grinder! While some 75-miles north up the coast, Malibu was having its moment of the season.

“The waves were really fun! “Cam Richards said. “I’ve been lucky enough to be here for a few hurricanes now — I was here for Marie, and this wasn’t that, but always nice to feel some real energy in California. Big thanks to the locals for sharing!”

And now, we’re on to the next thing. Check the SoCal forecast, right here.

Three different shades of Frank flirting with Newport; grommies on the cautionary approach, a sign explaining why that approach is necessary and then Wedge making that ‘high surf alert’ reality.

Wedge is well-known as a body-whomping haven. Sometimes, your best friend, others, you’re taken inside the washing machine.
