While Nazare opened the door for a 'feeling it' session yesterday, the rest of Europe was getting great waves too. Heck, even just a touch north or south from that Portuguese powerhouse, at Peniche and Ericeira, things were looking romantic.

Take this for example, Tom Lowe and Nathan Florence went for a session at Cave. “It's one of the best waves in the world,” said Nate, before running through the boards he'd opted for out there. Turns out, he too doesn't ride the same boards as bro John.

Meanwhile, up the way past Nazare, Supertubos was getting busy towards sunset "The light was dim, but some people were charging," said lensperson Helio Antonio, who spent the day at Nazare in the morning and then headed up to Peniche for last light. "Cool to see lots of different people out there."

Meanwhile, France Threw Down a Gauntlet

Unruly? Hell yeah. But you can't keep a French frother down. Kyllian Guerin goes all in. Vid by Greg Menager

Let's take a spin further up the great big western European flank now and land in Hossegor, France. It's a different story up there, the mindset is different, the waves are different. Yesterday was a paddle out the likes of which haven't been seen this season. Current moving so fast, you'd end up 1km down the beach rather than on the peak.

“The paddle out was not possible,” said professional peek-a-boo artist, Kyllian Guerin. I tried for about 30 minutes, couldn't make it.” So what's a barrel hound to do? “A few guys grabbed a ski and I hopped on. They actually went around helping anyone get out, was super cool.

Just, wow.

“And it was heavy, not perfect, not easy but some bombs out there.” Yeah, evidence above and throughout.

Now, here's something neat. This is grommie Jorre Claeys, U14 Belgium champ. A lot of Belgium surfers were in town for the country's championships, held each year in Hossegor.

"Some found if difficult," said Maarten Van De Velde, photographer. As you'd imagine when they're surfing the biggest swell of the season so far.

The thing about France is, you can stand at some point on the beach and watch this unfold. It's not hidden away, it's not behind headland or masses of people, it's right there, in your face. And it is glorious.

Simply look at the size. Some might think, huh, what's so special? But the reality is, when Hossegor is this size it is not easy. In fact, it is damn right difficult, one of the hardest places to surf well.

Ireland Dazzles Amidst the Gales

Way up north, Ireland was having it's own moment, if you could find a bit of shelter from that strong-to-very strong SSE wind, which edged further west as the day went on. Ideal for a few spots along Ireland's Atlantic coastline, even better if you approached it with the goose-chase mindset.

"Weather was hectic today and light wasn't great for the first part of the day, but some crazy stuff out there," said photographer Jonathan Snook. Again though, like the Portuguese big wave surfers, like the French barrel hounds, the Irish slab hunters are gearing up for what is about to happen on Sunday and Monday. A European hurricane strike?! Maybe. Keep an eye on the forecast, here.
